I'm looking for my 3rd Great-Grandfather, Jean "Jacob" Baptiste. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Pascagoula, Jackson County, MS. His tombstone reads "Jacob Baptiste - A Native of Italy" 15 March 1788 - 07 February 1866.
It is said that he took the name "Baptiste" upon his arrival here (and thus the children took the name) -- either in the area of Mobile, AL or New Orleans, LA but that his actual name may have been Bucovic. My research seems to show that he was a native of Austrian-controlled Dalmatia.
He married Eugenie Krebs in 1837 and they had at least 10 children.
