Crystal, This probably won't help you, but here goes.
I am John Edward Baker born 4-7-1948 in Greenbrier County,WV to Walter Owen and Bertha Launa Dorman Baker. I was told by my father's much older cousin, Alva Baker, that after the Civil War two brothers of my great-grandfather, Jacob Baker, went west because the South had lost and they didn't want to live in WV anymore after slavery was abolished. She stated their names were Samuel and Nathaniel Baker and one of them (I don't know which one) became a Sheriff or US Marshal or lawman of some sort. Sadly, she passed away before I could get any more info from her.

Then back in 1981-1983, I was working in a warehouse when a truck driver from TX delivered a load and his name was Samuel Baker. In talking with him, he stated his distant ancestor owned a farm in KY and was a sheriff there. He said his name (the ancestor) was Samuel who had a son , John who had a son, Samuel who had a son John etc, etc, on down to him and that he had kept up the tradition and named his son John.

There is a book in the Augusta County, VA Library that has a comprehensive history of the Baker family in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. My ancestors left the Shenandoah Valley with John Lewis, the founder of Lewisburg, WV. in the late 1700's-early 1800's. The only problem is there is no reference to any of my ancestors in WV in the VA book.

Oddly enough, my career has landed me back in the Shenandoah Valley of Va. I you are interested you can go to www.allstate.com and click on "Find an Agent", then type in my name and pull up a picture of me. Maybe we're related!
