I trace our family roots to a "Shy" Benjamin Allen (1735-1823). He lived most of his life in Baie Verte New Brunswick.
Although it appears definite that he fought on the British side as a NCO during the French and Indian wars at Beausejour(I have seen NB land petitions where he claims this)as well as Louisbourg and Quebec it seems much more difficult to ascertain which regiment he fought with. Muster rolls etc are incomplete or non exsistent. I have found a Benjamin Allen who was a corporal in Capt John Fraser's Company of the Fraser Highlanders (78th) when it was disbanded in 1763 and this Ben Allen accepted the offer to remain in Canada and be given a land grant. (see Clan Fraser of Canada Web Site) Also I found a Benjamin Allen, a discharged shoulder, who arrived in Boston from Louisbourg in November 1763. (Whitmore's Book Port Arrivals and Immigrants to Boston.) Online source claim he was from New England or Scotland or both. Perhaps he started in a New England Regiment or Rangers or in a British Regiment (40th, 45th or 47th) who all fought at Beausejour and then later transfered to the 78th. Anyway, does anybody have any thoughts or knowledge of which regiment(s)he fought with or reliable sources of his origin?
Also I have read on this sight that Carol Dobson has seen info to suggest that he was on the Rebel side during the outbreak of the American Revolution and that he was a tenant farmer with John Allan (no relation) who was one of the rebel leaders. I wonder what her source is. I have read in a book (The Seige of Fort Cumberland) that there was a group of rebel Acadian tenant farmers with John Allan and included is a Benajmin Allain. I wonder if this is who she is refering to. If so I have found evidence of an Acadian Benjamin Allain present at the same time and who in later years lived in this same area, slightly north, (Bouctouche) and so it makes it unlikely this could be the same guy.(info from the Universite de Moncton.) Any body have any sources that definitely place Benjamin Allen on one side or the other during the Revolution?
